Mardy Fish eased past Great Britain's James Ward 6-1 6-2 to book a place in the second round of the ATP Atlanta Tennis Championships.
The American sixth seed claimed his fourth career title in Newport on July 11 and carried that momentum to Atlanta, comfortably dispatching of wild card Ward.
Athens Olympic silver medallist Fish's triumph in Newport saw the 28-year-old jump 30 places to number 49 in the world rankings.
The shock of the day saw eighth seed Benjamin Becker of Germany beaten 6-3 6-3 by 32-year-old Michael Russell, the oldest American in the top 100 of the world rankings.
