Sebastien Bourdais (Peugeot 908 HDi-FAP) was provisionally in pole position for the 78th edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, having the fastest time of the 1st qualifying session (3:19.711), Wednesday evening on the circuit Sarthe. "It means something, but if it's dry tomorrow everything will be redone. Do not get carried away, but it's always good to finish a meeting, especially here, because it is my home"Said Bourdais, a native of Le Mans, after being warmly congratulated by his team.
On a track fully dried, driving the 908 No.3, Bourdais was signed shortly after his lap record 23.30, while the provisional pole was from the beginning of the meeting at 22:00 into the gloves of Nicolas Lapierre, the one of three pilots of the 908 leased to the team Oreca. "I did a clean lap without traffic, but I still lost a big bundle of tenths into turns Porsche" said Bourdais, who teamed this year with his compatriot Simon Pagenaud and Portugal's Pedro Lamy. The three men have won the 1000 early May Km of Spa-Francorchamps, the second round of the Le Mans Series. "This pole is completely temporary, it's Wednesday night, the race is Saturday, I'm a bit surprised by this enthusiasm, even if you have four Peugeot top," said Olivier Quesnel, head of Peugeot Sport, the rear of the booth. "It's like a rally on Saturday evening, we rushed to say you've won!"
N.3 The Bourdais-Lamy-Pagenaud overtook the 908 N.1 by Austrian Alexander Wurz and Spaniard Marc Gene (3:20.317), two of the three winners of 2009, joined this year by the Britain's Anthony Davidson, and the French No.2 Sarrazin, Franck Montagny and Nicolas Minassian (3:20.325). In comparison, in 2009, Sarrazin took three seconds to sign pole position in 3:22.888. Earlier in the day when the only practice session on a dirty track with hard tires, the difference was even more significant: 10 seconds better for the 908 Montagny as the best Audi R15 last year in free practice.
